"When Richard Mortimer throws a party, there is no choice—you just have to come, don't you?" said Erdem Moralioglu. Most of his London designer comrades—and a generous helping of club kids of all persuasions—certainly think so. Mortimer is something of a legend in the local club scene for his dearly departed Boombox party, of course. Those days have come and gone, but Mortimer's second act, as editor of the online fashion mag Ponystep, fortuitously comes with ample opportunities for revelry. Ponystep's parties tend to take place in Paris, but for one night, Mortimer repatriated them—to the Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen in East London, the old stomping grounds of Boombox, no less—for a very special event: his 30th birthday. Holly Fulton, Louise Gray, Kinder Aggugini, and Sophia Kokosalaki were among the designers who stopped by to wish the birthday boy well (and to blow off a little steam before London fashion week). Gareth Pugh and Jefferson Hack alternated sets on the decks, and the winsome Florrie Arnold—face of Nina Ricci's relaunched L'Elixir—performed a few songs, too. Mortimer's mates were toting masks with his face on them, and as you'd expect from London's party set, the maquillage on some of the guests was a sight to behold in itself. "In Paris, they are just so happy to have a party to go to," Mortimer said appreciatively when we tracked him down (we're pretty sure it was him and not a masked impostor). "Here, they really expect something nuts and out of control each time. They are the professional kind of party people, this lot, so I constantly have to raise the bar to keep them happy." As if on cue, the proof of a great party appeared: the cops at the door, trying to bring the noise and crowds under control. As if.—Afsun Qureshi
The Emmys Rundown 28 August, 2010, 9:00 pm
The 62nd annual Primetime Emmy Awards opened with a Glee-inspired performance of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run" starring host Jimmy Fallon as the Boss and a who's who of the evening's nominees, including Tina Fey, Lea Michele, Jane Lynch, and the dirty-dancing duo of Jon Hamm and Betty White (the year's by-now ubiquitous mascot). As Fallon—who soon swapped his blue-collar Springsteen drag for Tom Ford—put it, "It's been a phenomenal year in TV." The ceremony itself moved along fairly snappily—we especially appreciated the slug at the bottom of the screen announcing "George Clooney in 17 minutes." But if the relatively brisk pace was refreshing, the evening's fashions stuck to the contemporary awards-show script. One-shoulder gowns, as usual, were popular choices. Edie Falco's was Bottega Veneta and Joan Allen's was Michael Kors. Asymmetrical necklines weren't quite as prevalent as strapless ones, though, which turned up on Heidi Klum (seriously short Marchesa) and Claire Danes (sparkling Armani Privé). And so what if bared shoulders are predictable? We're betting any audience appreciation award would've gone to Sofia Vergara's buttercup yellow Carolina Herrera bustier dress (though Christina Hendricks' décolleté-baring Zac Posen might have been a close second). Still, there were some risk takers. January Jones chose an electric blue Atelier Versace with cone-shaped bra cups; Tina Fey opted for jet embroidered Oscar de la Renta; Rita Wilson went with a Prada runway dress dripping in clear crystals; and Anna Paquin wore an Alexander McQueen black gown from Resort with bold gold shoulder embellishments. It had NBC’s commentators comparing her unfavorably to a matador—but really, what do they know? It brought some welcome edge to the red carpet. Less edgy but indisputably chic was Julianna Margulies in a navy sequined L'Wren Scott tank dress. The Good Wife star also had the good fortune to receive a peck on the cheek from Clooney as she presented him with his Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, so we're calling it: She may have lost out to Kyra Sedgwick for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, but Margulies had the best night overall.—Nicole Phelps

Just-For-Fun Friday: RIP Kate Moss for Topshop 3 September, 2010, 4:13 am
When Topshop opened its first Kate Moss collection to the public in 2007, I, like many of you dear readers, lined up outside KLCC well before opening hours to receive it. I remember the time too - Kate Moss had been spearheading the comeback of Annie Hall, promised a line that would evoke just that, and Topshop was going to bring the designer collaboration to our shores. Pardon my weakness for nostalgia, but when it was announced that the next collection would be their last together, I saw it as the end of an era. Let's talk about that for today, just for fun!
Earlier this week, Sir Philip Green confirmed that Moss's 14th collection, out October 25th, will be her last with the brand. While both their sources describe the contract as having reached its natural conclusion, some say it's due to the dwindling in sales. Which I'd completely believe, considering how the collection started off sold out within minutes to ending up on sales racks. Some even say Green gave Moss the boot to make way for his daughter Chloe.
Green did mention, however, that the October collection will include several iconic pieces from previous collections. Like the shrunken vest, and sparrow print scarf perhaps? And that they will continue to release a downsized capsule of items twice per year. One thing's for sure is that Moss will be losing designer exclusivity after three years with Topshop.
How do you feel about it? Do you think of it as an end of an era? Are you happy to see Topshop move on? Or will you miss Moss's ability to turn basic staples into quirky one offs? What was your favourite piece from the collaboration? Just for fun, let's discuss!

Breaking News: Lanvin for H&M 2 September, 2010, 2:46 am
Yes! you've heard it right! This Autumn, Lanvin will be designing an exclusive collection for fast-fashion powerhouse H&M. I was bursting with excitement when I found out about this collaboration. Images of the possible ensembles that might come from this came flashing through my mind. I know that the announcement of Karl Lagerfeld's collaboration was shocking but I think this is just as surprising. Other previous collections includes; Stella McCartney, Comme des Garçons and Sonia Rykiel.
Lanvin's artistic director Alber Elbaz, and menswear designer Lucas Ossendrijver will be designing the collection. If you have seen Lanvin's creations, you will know that they are all about high-end French luxury with a modern flair. In recent years, the brand has been known to pioneer in trends such as ribbons, bows, pearls, raw edges and many more.
Lanvin Fall 2010 Ready-to-WearI am sure that this collection will give us the best of both worlds but at the end of the day there are just too may possibilities.
As if everyone is not excited enough, in a new twist, the Lanvin for H&M collection will be revealed to the world through a special film that will launch on November 2 and will be able to be seen on the H&M website. Just three weeks after on November 23, the collection will hit H&M stores worldwide. This has got to be one of the most anticipated fashion events of the year and I can't wait to get my hands on the collection.
Before I end this, here's what the designer has to say:
"H&M approached us to collaborate, and see if we could translate the dream we created at Lanvin to a wider audience, not just a dress for less. I have said in the past that I would never do a mass-market collection, but what intrigued me was the idea of H&M going luxury rather than Lanvin going public. This has been an exceptional exercise, where two companies at opposite poles can work together because we share the same philosophy of bringing joy and beauty to men and women around the world."
Alber Elbaz, artistic director of Lanvin. (via: H&M)

Lanvin is the new designer collaboration for H&M
The release of several new black and white videos on the official H&M Facebook page has led to rife speculation about who would be the next designer to appear in the store's shelves. Possible names run the gamut from Thomas Maier, Carolina Herrera, to Taiwanese fashion house Shiatzy Chen, but let the rumours lay to rest, it will be none other than Alber Elbaz' Lanvin who will play designer in H&M's lair. More news on the extremely hyped about campaign here.

Kate Moss' Topshop Collaboration Comes to an End
Kate Moss for Topshop Spring Summer 2010 collection
Kate Moss' fourteeth collection for Topshop that comes out in October will also be her final one. What started out as six collections per year was cut to two annually and finally, with little steam left in this collaboration train, it has come to a natural end. Both camps agree that it was "a natural conclusion" though insiders hint that dwindling sales might have been a motivating factor. Nonetheless, there will still be Kate Moss for Topshop collections, though smaller and comprising 12 to 15 pieces. It will be released two to three times per year.

DIY: Fringe Tongue Shoes 1 September, 2010, 8:11 pm
I was browsing through Etsy, when I stumbled across a great DIY. It's something quick and easy for those who are sick and tired of what they see in their shoe closet but can't possibly go on another shopping binge. Rather than chucking them out, hopefully this will create new possibilities. Try them out here!
Materials:- PVC fabric- Lace up shoes- Scissors- Needle and thread
Step 1:Just use a random card to measure if you don't have a particular size in mind.
Step 2:- Trace and cut out 4 pieces (two for each side).
Step 3:Roughly estimate and cut the fringes, as thick or thin as you like.
Step 4:Place it on top of each other and fold it in - leaving an allowance for the eyelets to attach them on your shoes later.
Step 5:Hem the sides neatly.
Step 6:Use a sharp object to poke the holes for which your shoes laces will go through.
*Repeat the process for the other side and that's it! Enjoy!
How do you revamp old shoes that are still in good condition? Do share your creativity.

Icon of the Week: Issey Miyake 1 September, 2010, 6:36 am
Chances are, you know of Issey Miyake. You might even have a space for him on your perfume collection. But how many of you know that he's actually a fashion designer first, let alone that his is the next it-bag to look out for? This week, I'd like to properly introduce you to Issey Miyake.
Miyake was born in Hiroshima, Japan. As a seven year-old, Miyake witnessed the nuclear bomb dropped by the USA in 1945, and survived his mother who died from radiation exposure four years after. Not one to be plagued by a tragic childhood, Miyake moved on by aspiring to be a fashion designer. After graduation, he moved to Paris where he started his career with Guy Laroche. Two years later, he was snapped up by Givenchy.
In 1971, Miyake moved on to Tokyo, where he eventually set up his first creative studio - the Miyake Design Studio. The place was treated more as a laboratory, where Miyake would experiment with various blend of fabric and synthetic textiles. Soon enough, Miyake set up the first clothing company to ever be set up in Japan, and began showing collections locally, in New York and Paris by 1973.
In the late '80s, Miyake began experimenting with new methods of pleating that would allow flexibility for its wearer, as well as an ease in care and protection. The result culminated in 1993, with the launch of a new technique of garment pleating called Pleats Please - polyester jersey garments that would be cut and sewn first, then sandwiched between layers of paper and fed into a heat press to be pleated. The fabric's memory would hold the pleat and never require further ironing or folding.
Pleats Please was an instant hit in combining technology, functionality, beauty and practicality.
And it's ads always projected novelty ideas. They highlighted the garment's aesthetics, and always linked it back as a symbol to the Japanese. It instantly became iconic.
In 1997, Miyake continued to revolutionize garment making with A-POC. It is made in a sequence in which tubes of fabric are machine-processed and cut into various shapes as chosen by the consumer themselves.
If you were wondering, A-POC is in fact an acronym of 'a piece of cloth'.
Think thread going into an industrial knitting or weaving machine and re-emerging instantly as a piece of clothing! The interactive method reduced leftover fabric, and made way for a modern method of bespoke custom-made clothing.
In 1999, Miyake looked to his associate, Naoki Takizawa to head collection design, so he could return to fabric research full-time.
When Takizawa left the group to open his own brand in 2007, Dai Fujiwara replaced him as Creative Director.
Miyake continues to oversee collections at large, which enables the brand's innovative philosophy to live on. Case in point, the launch of me Issey Miyake in 2001, a line of exclusive one-sized shirts that could stretch to fit its wearer perfectly.
More recently, Issey Miyake launched the Pleats Please bag - a collapsible tote inspired by the panels of metal steel workers fuse together to create a functional structure. Just last month, I've been seeing more and more replicas of it on the streets of Bangkok... Which has always proven to forewarn massive trend.
It's a sad thing really, that not many know of Miyake's work beyond fragrance...
Because he singlehandedly put Asia on the fashion radar, and spent much of his career bridging the gap between both the east and the west, and art and fashion.
And his brand never followed fashion trends; instead it stood to revolutionize the technology behind it.
What do you think of Issey Miyake?

Q+A: Max Tan (SG) 31 August, 2010, 10:26 pm
Max Tan is definitely one young fashion designer to keep your eye out for. Already creating buzz in the Singaporean fashion scene, Max Tan is paving for himself a successful international career with his self-titled label - Max.Tan. The designer creates his innovative designs by having the tenacity to challenge the norm. This season, he introduces his Autumn/Winter 2010/11 collection - AGAINST. Check out what Max Tan has to say about his works of art, his life and his ultimate dream!1. Tell us more about yourself; if your life and career were made into a movie, how would the synopsis read?A dark and melancholic retelling of the life of Max Tan - contemporary fashion's l'enfant terrible who found himself breaking the rules of fashion.
2. Who would you cast as your mentor, your protégé and your muse, if you could pick anyone in the world - living or dead? There wouldn't. It would be a self-narrated introspective monologue into my world.3. Your latest Autumn/Winter collection AGAINST has gotten many rave reviews; why such an angst-y name for such a beautiful collection?Although it seems confrontational, I feel that we can look at AGAINST positively without all the negative angst-ridden sentiment. Through AGAINST, I'm challenging the traditional ways of how garments are constructed and made by infusing a rebellious streak throughout the collection. AGAINST is about being both right and wrong at once, and how what would be obviously wrong can in fact result in a series of beautiful "mistakes".
4. What are you personally against (i.e. cruelty to animals/camel toe/ ugly designs/people who don't appreciate good ones... etc)?I'm most true to myself when I challenge norms and break the rules of fashion. As such, the one thing that I'm naturally against are those who are slaves to fashion trends and also those who employ marketing strategies that detract away from the clothes to lure people to their brand. Fashion should express outwardly who we are inwardly.5. Your designs tend to be more avant-garde than what we are used to in Asia, how do you manage to market them and what generally are your buyers' habits like? The look creates an avant-garde impression when styled together. However, most of my pieces work easily into an existing minimalist wardrobe. All one needs are the wardrobe basics to go with my creations. My clothes resonate most with women who demand that fashion must express who they are. They appreciate minimalism, unconventional cuts, detailed construction and interesting fabrics.6. Tell us more about your boutique...The boutique at Parco's "next Next" section at Millenia Walk in Marina Bay is an interesting mix of monotones. A 'floating' ribbon of white is the highlight of this store. It reflects my view of unconventional construction being juxtaposed with sensibility and functionality; which is what max.tan is all about.
7. How has your experience been as a young designer in the Singapore fashion industry? I'm often misunderstood and it gets lonely at times since there aren't many Singaporeans who are able to understand my point of view. But it is also the love and support of my fans and close friends whose healthy critique of my work keeps me pushing myself. I believe that a successful fashion designer is one who constantly innovates and challenges oneself. In order to stay current, I need to always be looking forward.
8. How does it feel to have your own label? And what is the first thing you would tell a young designer trying to make it in the fashion scene in Singapore? It is an amazing experience that I have the opportunity to develop my own creative vision. However, I don't think this is a path for everyone - you really have to be prepared that it is much more grit than glamour.9. Describe your design aesthetics and are your designs a reflection of your personal style/personality?Soft geometry meets androgyny. I have a love-hate relationship with drafting. I'm in love with drafting, but I can't resist breaking the rules because of my rebellious streak. I experiment a lot with draping - it gives me the freedom to explore, but at the end of the day, I fine-tune it through the drafting process. I long for freedom but can't live without a little control in my life. Basic 'boring' geometric shapes are huge building blocks of my collections. How I can give 'life' and change these fixed shapes is a constant question I ask myself all the time. I always look at my garments as a three-dimensional sculpture as opposed to a flat jigsaw puzzle.
10. There is a sense of surrealism in your designs, in the world of Max Tan what would I find there? You'll find garments which aren't what you think they are at first glace. For instance, I have a garment that looks like a jumpsuit hanging off a dress which when multi-worn as a jumpsuit, the back forms a silhouette of a dress.
11. What was it like when your label MAX.TAN was selected to take part in the prestigious MODEFABRIEK show in Amsterdam?I was extremely honoured to be invited to this special showcase of the CUTTING EDGE platform of MODEFABRIEK. To be able to show my work alongside seven other young avant-garde designers from all around the world was recognition in itself that I am heading in the right direction.12. You have accomplished quite a lot as a young designer, what was your proudest moment if you could choose? My proudest moment was when my S/S 2010 campaign produced by testshootgallery was selected by stylesight.com, a premier trend forecasting and reporting service, as one of the Top 10 fashion campaigns of Spring/Summer 2010. I have also just been featured on Vogue Paris online and feel incredibly blessed to have garnered the appreciation of the critical eyes of these major industry stakeholders.
13. Care to share with us your ultimate dream as a fashion designer?I'm a dreamer and I would like to go back in time if I could. To live in the Golden Age when Rei Kawakubo, Yohji Yamamoto and their Japanese counterparts took Paris by storm with their shapeless and innovative approach to fashion.
14. Back to your hypothetical movie, what would the sequel be like?In the sequel to the movie, I will be crafting my garments in my small studio in London and getting ready to unveil my next collection in the intimate setting of my own studio.
15. If you could walk in someone else's shoe for a day, who would you like to be? I'd like to walk in the shoes of Edward Scissorshands for a day and have the chance to see the world through his eyes. He has an incredibly strange, beautiful mind.

Blog Savvy: Miss Incomplete (MY) 31 August, 2010, 3:39 am
Being a person who doesn't have an ounce of eclecticism when styling my outfits, I am always inspired by people who dare to experiment with their style. Our Blog Savvy of the week - BabyQi of Miss Incomplete, happens to be one of those people who dares to take that step out of the box. As one of our Wearnesday regulars, BabyQi likes dressing up according to her mood and her ever-changing obsessions (i.e. socks with sandals/heels) while keeping in mind that what she wears is a reflection of who she is.
Based on that, it is safe to say that she always has fun with fashion and doesn't take it too seriously. The 21-year-old blogger, who started blogging June last year, admits that her blog is neither about fashion nor the life of a fancy fashion blogger but rather a platform for her to share her daily looks and a bit on her life.
She considers the new and improved Nicole Richie as one of her fashion role models. Admiring the fact that she always looks effortlessly chic and stylish while carrying herself with such sophistication.BabyQi's blog is filled with photos of her wearing fashion items that she thinks everyone should give it a try; like a great pair of sneakers (check her out in her Converse sneakers below), a pair of killer heels and a classic handbag.
She favours popular brands such as Topshop, Zara, Forever 21 and Cotton On while choosing footwear brands like Aldo, Charles & Keith and Steve Madden because she can easily find five-inch heels at these stores.Having just returned back to Kuching after studying in KL for two years, BabyQi is currently in the progress of developing her very own online store. To find out more about that, check out her blog and her current blogshop - BaoQi's which sells new/second-hand fashion items.
For more of BabyQi's looks visit her Chictopia and Lookbook.

Twitter Troll: Transvestite Acne, Christmas In September, And Models With "Life Experience" 3 September, 2010, 2:17 pm
coolhunting: "New Converse Chucks by Missoni drop today at Aloha Rag, Canvas, Jeffrey's and Missoni. http://twitpic.com/2kv9ly" First a water bottle collab with San Pellegrino, now a partnership with Converse? Missoni is taking over the world, and we think we like it.
derekblasberg: "I must say this British Vogue headline grabbed my attention: TRANSVESTITE ACNE http://bit.ly/aoQXcr (FYI: Sadly, it's not about tranny zits)" While reading about pimply transvestites sounds thrilling, we think these new androgynous shirt designs are pretty fantastic.
cutblog: "Proenza Schouler wants to cast models with 'life experience' for their spring show" Uh, this might be one hard feat considering most of them aren't a day older than 20. But we like the idea, Proenza.
nicolerichie: "Is it too early to be excited for Christmas?" Hold your reindeer, Nicole - don't you know that Santa will be bringing presents down the runway in less than two weeks?
evachen212: "o la la! the rendering of the new Chanel Soho store? looks SO nice! visit http://soho-2010.chanel.com for more pix http://twitpic.com/2kvah8" Just when we thought we couldn't love Chanel anymore. An oversized acrylic Chanel No. 5 bottle doubling as video art? Genius.

Urban Outfitters' Around The World Boutique Is Bringing Scandinavian Designers Stateside 3 September, 2010, 10:00 am
Urban Outfitters is once again taking us on a trip by inviting designers from abroad into their stores. This season, they've headed to Scandinavia, offering up goodies from Swedish designers like Carin Wester, Rodebjer, and House of Dagmar; and Danish designers Wood Wood and Stine Goya. What could be more perfect than getting submerged in these Northern locals this fall? With plenty of leggings to help us wear our skirts even in the winter, and a plethora of mini and maxi dresses paired with chunky knits, these designers—exclusively at two NYC Urban stores starting Sept 9, 2010—are keeping us cute and cozy as things start to get chilly.
What came first? The Urban Outfitters Australia collections, of course!

Salon Workers Steal Rafael Nadal's Hair 3 September, 2010, 9:00 am
Looks like Spain's tennis star Rafael Nadal has some seriously sought after, luscious locks—whether they are on his head on not. Page Six is reporting that when Nadal took a trip to get a little trim at official US Open salon, Julien Farel,
on Madison Avenue, some of the women staffers at the salon swept
up his discarded tresses and put them right into their own pockets! There's hair envy and then there's hair envy. How do you say creepy in Spanish? (Page 6)
Sofia Coppola's Chic Venice Film Festival Look 3 September, 2010, 9:00 am
While we're used to seeing celebs dressed to the nines for photo calls at the Venice Film Festival, this low-key look from Sofia Coppola is arguably one of our favorites. The Somewhere director was snapped wearing all Louis Vuitton, and we love how she mixed up a borrowed-from-the-boys look with black wedges and one of her amazing bags for the French fashion house. But let us know what you think...is this a perfect outfit or a botched assignment? (FabSugar)

Agent Provocateur released their Johan Renck-shot fall 2010 campaign video yesterday, with model Kirsty Hume directing a Y-front and bunny-ear-clad dude in what's to be a wild sex tape. There's stripping, butt-slapping, a hidden Peeping Tom... probably much more action your computer screen has seen before noon in quite a while. Click through for the video. (WWD)

Ivy League 1 September, 2010, 4:00 am
Noticed a shortage of smartly-dressed gentlemen in the streets last night? That’s because they were all on the seventh floor of Saks Fifth Avenue, toasting the arrival of Gant by Michael Bastian in the store, as well as the reprinting of Take Ivy. Bastian, fresh back from a trip to London, was in high spirits, and so were shoppers, as men have been eagerly anticipating this day after a supremely successful launch.

Summer Designer Series: Monique Péan 23 August, 2010, 5:30 am
Blood diamonds? Not a chance. In the midst of so much controversy over the origin of precious gems, it’s refreshing to see a designer firmly rooted in sustainability. Meet Monique Péan. The runner up for the 2009 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, she creates stunning, one-of-a-kind jewels that incorporate recycled gold and conflict-free diamonds from Australia, as well as other materials you were likely fascinated with when you went through that paleontology stage as a youngster.

Summer Designer Series: Mary Katrantzou 17 August, 2010, 4:00 am
For a name so tricky to pronounce, you’ve certainly heard it on the tips of every ultra-insider. Greek-born and London-based Mary Katrantzou is only going into her fourth season, but her show has become one of the buzziest of London Fashion Week. She’s up against the likes of Jason Wu for this year’s Swiss Textile Award (Rodarte won last year), and she was selected by a judging panel of Manolo Blahnik, Daphne Guinness, and Giles Deacon as a nominee in the inaugural year of the Dorchester Fashion Prize—not bad for a former Rhode Island School of Design architecture student who anticipated designing textiles rather than collections. The Daily caught up with Katrantzou to talk digital print mania, humble beginnings, and how Sarah Mower snapped her out of it.
